I give you the Native Hatchet. It is an upgraded/super limited 1 of 1 version of my Heirloom Hatchets I sold back during the winter. When forging the last batch I saved one of the hatchet heads to make something special with. This is the result. First off, I cant begin to describe my love for a well made hatchet. A tool with sooo many uses. Just like the blades Pirate Forge is known for this hatchet is absolute performance. Due to the intricate one at a time in house heat treat this hatchet takes and holds a super sharp edge. Aside from the performace this hatchet also has top notch constuction and looks! Forged from Carbon Steel with some nice eye drifts I finish up with a hand/hammer drift on top of my swage block. After the lengthy heat cycles and hardening it goes for over 6 hours of tempering. I then free hand grind some performance bevels and laser engrave the extra large Pirate Forge Grail Mark and "Pirate Forge" on the opposite side. These marks are much bigger than the ones on the Heirloom Hatchets and take a great deal of time under the laser. The edge bevels as well as the back hammer face are taken to a gorgeous polished finish. The entire axe is heat treated to a durable tight grain making even the back hammer face just as much of a high performance tool as the edge. The head is hung on a free hand shaped American Hickory handle with a hammer forged copper lanyard pin. When hanging the head I use marine grade epoxy not only as a lubricant but for the rock solid and water tight seal. The axe head features a finger choil for a high grip when using the blade for detail work or as a knife blade. The handle features hand engravings thoughout and a torched aged finish to reveal all of the epic grain in the wood. The Sheath for this "Native Hatchet" is also pretty special. Handmade from heavy duty veg tan leather. It features black double stitching, ornate pyrography, Indian Head engraving, skull and bones engraving, gothic cross engraving/branding, hand forged copper rivets, dome turquise buttons, and a fold over snap design for a snug fit. The sheath has been given an antiqued finish. It is very nice and compliments the hatchet it holds.
